The Democratic People’s Republic of Karazhavia is a fictional post-Soviet country situated on the northern coast of the Caspian Sea. On the one hand, the project is an exercise in alternative history and worldbuilding. On the other, the Democratic People’s Republic of Karazhavia represents an experiment in legitimacy creation. Through a comprehensive array of graphic design elements such as flags, maps, bank notes, repurposed photography and AI-generated imagery, that share a common visual identity, the project aims to illustrate the ease at which proto-states can be created.
