The thesis deals with Soviet-era architecture in Estonian heritage conservation areas, its history and evaluation. The aim of the thesis is to create a comprehensive picture of the buildings created during the Soviet period in the heritage protection areas created in 1973, to discuss the evaluation of the architecture of this period in the light of the preparation of new protection regulations – the statutes of the heritage conservation areas. The thesis provides an overview of the principles of protection of heritage conservation areas through the ages focusing on Soviet-era architecture. Four cities out of ten have been examined in detail: Pärnu, Kuressaare, Tartu and Võru.
